Each spring, Pineridge Grouse Camp hosts a woodcock banding clinic for hunters, dog handlers, and wildlife enthusiasts interested in learning how American woodcock are located, handled, and banded for research. The clinic provides an inside look at the banding process, including why woodcock are banded, spring nesting habitat, the equipment used in the field, and the important role pointing dogs play in locating birds. Participants will also have the opportunity to assist with banding work and learn about the long-term data collected through woodcock banding efforts across the United States.

The 2026 clinic is scheduled for May 14–17 (dates may change and will be updated on here). The program also includes instruction on creating woodcock habitat and training dogs to remain steady to flush during banding situations. If conditions cooperate, participants may even witness the woodcock’s well-known spring “sky dance.” Pointing dogs are welcome to attend, and dogs interested in banding work can be certified for woodcock banding during the clinic under the guidance of Jerry Havel.
